Conowingo Reservoir

Located in Maryland

Conowingo Reservoir is a 9,000-acre reservoir located in northeastern Maryland on the lower Susquehanna River. It was created in 1928 by the Conowingo Dam, which is owned and operated by Exelon Corporation. The reservoir is primarily used for hydroelectric power generation, flood control, and water supply. The Conowingo Reservoir is a popular destination for boating, fishing, and birdwatching. The reservoir is home to a variety of fish species, including striped bass, largemouth bass, and catfish. Bald eagles can also be spotted in the area, as they are attracted to the fish in the reservoir and the dam's spillway. In recent years, there have been concerns about the impact of the Conowingo Dam on water quality in the Chesapeake Bay. Sediments and nutrients that have built up behind the dam have the potential to be released during significant storm events, which could negatively affect the health of the Chesapeake Bay. As a result, there are ongoing efforts to improve water quality in the reservoir and the bay through sediment management and other measures.
